Bible Passage: Lamentations 1–5
Memory Verse: Lamentations 3:22b-23
Bible Truth: When we are sad, we can talk to God.

Lesson Introduction:
This a painting of Jeremiah by the famous artist Michelangelo. How does Jeremiah look? Does he look happy, sad, excited? Jeremiah looks sad and discouraged. Do you remember all the messages and warnings that Jeremiah gave the people about how bad things would happen if they did not stop sinning? Well, Jeremiah’s message came true, and today we are going to see how Jeremiah felt about that.

Watch Joel’s video, and then continue below!

Discuss these questions together as a family:

What was Joel’s song about?

Why was Jeremiah sad?

Where did Joel visit today?

How do they help people who are experiencing difficult times?

Who is always with us, even during tough times?

Read Lamentations 3:19-27. As you read, make sure to talk about and “hard” words and what they mean-like faithfulness!

Finish the study together with prayer. Use this time to talk about what might be making you sad right now, or scared or angry. Show your children how when we are feeling those things we can go to God in prayer. Pray together and ask God to help each person with the feelings they talked about.

Use these questions for more Bible study together as a family!

  1. What city did Jeremiah lament about? (Jerusalem, Lamentations 1:7)
  2. What happened to the temple when the people of Jerusalem did not repent? (It was destroyed, Lamentations 2:6)
  3. Why did Jeremiah say he and God’s people did not perish? (Because of God’s faithful love, Lamentations 3:22)
  4. How often are God’s mercies new? (Every morning, Lamentations 3:22-23)
  5. Who did Jeremiah choose to put his hope in? (God, Lamentations 3:24)
  6. Even when God allows people to experience suffering, what does He also show His people? (His compassion because of His faithful love, Lamentations 3:32)
  7. What is Jeremiah’s ask God to do to help bring joy back to their hearts? (“Lord, bring us back to you.” Lamentations 5:21)
